Mahalah's Blog Spot
Hello all, as I am sure you are already aware I am Mahalah Read. Last year I began a double degree majoring in science at the University of Wollongong. In my spare time I have been able to keep up craft and sewing projects. You can read more about the past month below, thanks to my hard working parents who have been updating this website.
An Update of My Year
June 2026
Last year, I started a double degree in Bachelor of Science and Arts at the University of Wollongong.
I transitioned relatively quickly into the new environment and was lucky in having a very good support network, including my parents who called me often and visited whenever they could, and carers and support providers who made me feel less anxious living away from my accustomed home and community.
My siblings and I all moved back home to Canowindra in November 2025 because of some trouble with our NDIS plans. Dad made some sacrifices and stepped in to cover supports that our NDIS plans could no longer afford. It was good to see the whole family again, but I am forever grateful for the spacious house and property that allows me to have much-needed alone time from my brother and sister.
Mid-January this year, I moved back into Kooloobong village, accommodation on-campus just a five-minute walk (or a two-minute zoom in my wheelchair) away from the main Uni buildings. The Autumn semester started in February, and I had already enrolled in two International Relations subjects and a subject titled ‘Global challenges in science’.
If you ever see me around, I beg you do NOT ask me about them and expect a detailed answer; by then, I have probably forgotten most about the subjects. As I am writing this, successfully finishing this semester, all I can say is that they were very insightful classes, and most of the tutors were engaging and humorous.
I have enjoyed living away from home and the numerous advantages that come with it, such as the nice weather, the peace and quiet, as well as more social opportunities and being close to the CBD.
The Autumn semester is over now, and I finished my last (and only) exam on the 20th of June! I hope to complete some sewing and craft projects over the month break as well as visit the Nan Tien temple, which is located near Wollongong and is the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere!
